A procurement team all for success
How ADR Learning helped a large UK local authority improve its procurement teams skills
Dorset County Council serves a population of 400,000 and covers a large area of the South Western England. In 2007, it reviewed its spending and found a serious funding gap.
This led to the Fit for the Future programme, aimed at making the whole organisation more effective. The procurement department identified a clear set of objectives:
- To help buyers work in a more commercial way through a category management approach
- To achieve savings in specific categories
- To engage more effectively with stakeholders and improve customer satisfaction
ADR Learning consultants identified where capabilities were lacking using their unique Development Needs Analysis programme. They then led several training workshops and team members took part in self-learning activities based on the user-friendly category management toolkit produced by ADR Learning.
Further workshops encouraged team members to share their learning and compare ways of doing their work more effectively, while one-to-one coaching helped them fine-tune their skills.
To enhance and accelerate planned savings, category managers were given specific category projects.
The project resulted in a much more professional procurement team, improved motivation and clear progress towards closing the funding gap. Stakeholder satisfaction has improved markedly and benefits have been embedded for continuous improvements into the future.
