Skills audit and competency framework for KPMG
KPMG in the UK is a leading provider of professional services including audit, tax and advisory, with over 10,000 partners and staff working in 22 offices.
The company has a twenty-strong team of purchasing professionals in the UK who handle a wide range of buying functions, including facilities, marketing, IT, travel and catering.
The department required a clearly defined career development path for its purchasing professionals. It was seeking a way to define which skills and areas of experience a member of staff should possess in order to carry out specific roles or to move into particular areas of responsibility. The firm wanted to introduce a clear and comprehensive competency framework for the purchasing team, to more clearly define role objectives. The aim was to give individuals a clear indication of how they could develop their careers, and where they needed to develop and enhance their skills and experience.
KPMG called on ADR Learning to design this competency framework for them, to encompass every role within the purchasing team, from the most junior to the most senior, detailing what expertise was required for each position. This would give staff a clear indication of where they should be in their skills development, and where they currently stand.
ADR Learning carried out a detailed and comprehensive skills assessment audit for all staff using an innovative online skills assessment tool. We also created a training programme for the department, based on the real needs of the team.
KPMG has benefitted from a more motivated purchasing team which is developing its expertise and learning new skills. This will aid in staff retention, and will support a more efficient and effective purchasing function.
Staff will benefit from having a clear definition of what skills competencies they possess and where they need to gain fresh expertise and experience. The training is being delivered in-house by experts from ADR Learning.
Staff are also being trained to exert more influence over purchasing decisions throughout the organisation, extending engagement between the department and senior colleagues within KPMG. This will further enhance the importance and influence of purchasing within the company, and drive improvements in buying activity.
